ANN MAKEN (Madeleine Kennke, *1978 Finsterwalde) has been active as an artist under this pseudonym since 2010. In the years following her studies at the University of Graphic Design and Fine Arts in Freiburg (1997-2003, lecturers: Dietrich Schön, Ari Naher, Heinz Treiber), influenced by the birth of her three children, she devoted herself to portrait and landscape photography and led art workshops with children in nature. Having had her own studio since 2018, she has been working with black ink on white canvas since 2020, a technique that deepens her themes of liveliness, the depth of a moment and awareness. In her work, she focuses on the essence of a portrait, exploring its liveliness through lines. ANN MAKEN currently works with fresh flowers, which serve as models for her compositions, complemented by additional lines that add depth to the title themes. As a striking element, she often adds her artist’s first name in red spray paint, a contrasting accent to the black ink. Since 2023, a studio with a winter garden has complemented her creative space in Freiburg, which serves not only as a workspace but also as an exhibition space. ANN MAKEN’s art invites us to be aware of the preciousness of the moment, its depth, its facets, and its richness.
